the bird

yesterday morning while taking a walk around the neighborhood we found a baby bird that fell out of his nest. there was no way we could put it back since it was three stories above us and there was no way he could fly back up by himself. cars were speeding close by, he almost got run over..... so we took him home. we feed him a mixture of cornmeal and baby rice (with a syringe), and after a day he is almost strong enough to fly out of his box; the whole time he's been communicating with his kind, some of whom have come to visit him in the backyard.
the thing that sucks is that we can't leave the house for more than a couple of hours at a time cause we need to feed him. it's almost like having a newborn again.

crazy murat

I've been wanting to post this story for a while.

In 2007 I spent a week in ISTANBUL, TURKEY, doing a project/exhibition sponsored by LEE JEANS EUROPE ... I shot for 3 days, and then we put up a big show in the GARAGE ISTANBUL space.
On the first day, while roaming the city streets, I noticed a guy walking around reading from a book. Of course, I snapped a shot and moved on. Later when we were editing for the show, we really liked the shot. A couple of days later, I did an interview for a local daily paper, HURIYET, talking about how I started shooting to basically PRESERVE MY SANITY during the madness that was going on in my country in 1993. Among others, they chose this image to accompany the interview ....

At the opening of the show, I noticed a familiar face in the crowd, and realized it was the reading guy ... he approached me, very excited to be in the show; his friend had seen the article and told him about it. His name was MURAT KOCAK, and he gave me the book he was reading from as a present. The guy had amazing energy.

The day after the opening I stopped by the gallery, and they told me that Murat had stopped by to give me something. It was his personal handmade diary.

On the last several pages of the diary he wrote me a note ....

Here is the translation by my Turkish friend ....

I was DEEPLY, DEEPLY touched, almost to the point of tears.

These are the things that make this life worth living.

DIY C-41 color processing

yep, I did it, and it's not as hard as I thought it would be. maybe a little more complicated than b&w processing, you need to be more careful about the temperature, but no big deal. they make it sound far more complicated than it actually is.
I processed a roll that I found lying around, probably from around 8 years ago, and here we go ... so the conclusion is not only is b&w for losers, but so is color that you don't process yourself. SRBIJA!

fucked up negs

While we were in Belgrade I gave 20 rolls of film to a lab for processing (btw, that lab was recommended to me by a photographer friend). Good price, all good, I went there, picked up my negs, and when I got home I almost had a heart attack. Two rolls looked like a tank ran over them. I called the lab, yelled at them, got my money back, but wtf, that didn't bring back my shots ....

So, I guess the only way is to do everything yourself. Color film processing too, I've never done it, but it's not rocket science.
I just bought a small color processor yesterday, and will give it a try very soon. Independence is the key. If you fuck something up, at least it's your own fault.

my slovenian friend PETER RAUCH sent me his latest book, TRAFFIC KIDS. I love the feel of the whole thing, some great images and beautiful printing. I have no idea where you can buy it, but if you email Peter I'm sure he'll give you some suggestions ...
